SHOW WHAT I HAVE

WONYOUNG

Personal Background

Wonyoung was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. She has an older sister. She attended English school when she stayed in Atlanta, Georgia temporarily when she was little. She graduated on February 9, 2023, from the School of Performing Arts Seoul (SOPA), under the Department of Practical Music.

Her older sister, Jang Daah, is a fairly new South-Korean actress under KINGKONG by STARSHIP who starred in her first TV drama, 'Pyramid Game' in 2024.

Career

Trainee and Pre-debut

Wonyoung joined Starship Entertainment as a trainee in 2016 after being scouted at a school event. She trained for about 1 year before participating in "Produce 48," where she ranked first and debuted as the center of IZONE in 2018. After IZONE’s disbandment in 2021, she debuted with IVE in December 2021.

Music Bank

In August 2021, she was announced as a permanent host for KBS's "Music Bank," alongside ENHYPEN's Sunghoon.

Debut with IVE

Wonyoung is known for being the group's center and one of the vocalists. She is recognized for her tall stature, striking visuals, and stage presence. Wonyoung has also been praised for her growth as a vocalist and performer since her debut.

Blue & Black

In July 2022, Wonyoung collaborated with fellow IVE member Leeseo on the promotional single "BLUE & BLACK" for the Pepsi Korea campaign. The song was released on June 28, 2022, and showcases Wonyoung and Leeseo's vocal abilities and has a catchy, upbeat vibe that aligns with the brand's energetic image.

Renewal of Contract Music Bank

On September 1, Wonyoung had renewed her contract as an MC on Music Bank for another year, continuing her role alongside actor,Lee Chae-min.

Stepping down from Music Bank

In January 2023, Wonyoung stepped down from her role as a host on "Music Bank" to focus more on her activities with IVE and her personal growth. During her tenure as a host, Wonyoung was praised for her professionalism, charm, and ability to connect with both the audience and the artists she interviewed. Her departure was met with mixed reactions from fans, who appreciated her contributions to the show but understood her decision to prioritize her career as an idol.

Jang Wonyoung and her agency, Starship Entertainment, filed a lawsuit against the operator of the YouTube channel "Sojang" (also known as "탈덕수용소" or "Taldeok Camp") for spreading false and defamatory information about her.

In a landmark victory, Jang Wonyoung won her civil lawsuit against the YouTuber, who was ordered to pay damages. This case has been seen as a significant precedent, as it was one of the first times a YouTuber's identity was revealed through legal action, holding them accountable for their malicious online actions. The ruling affirmed that the YouTuber's content was not based on objective facts but was instead fabricated and harmful, causing emotional distress to Jang Wonyoung and disrupting her professional activities.

Impact and Influence

Cultural Icon

Jang Wonyoung's influence has extended far beyond her music career. She has been dubbed a 4th Gen ‘IT’ Girl and is known as a fashion icon and brand ambassador, with items she wears often selling out quickly.

A significant cultural phenomenon associated with her is ‘Wonyoungism’, a lifestyle trend that promotes self-care, self-improvement, and a positive mindset. The movement encourages people to focus on their health, beauty, and personal growth through habits like healthy eating, exercise, skincare, and maintaining a disciplined and confident attitude.

The term ‘Wonyoungism’ has even emerged to describe the lifestyle she promotes, centered on self-care, self-improvement, and confidence.

'Lucky Vicky' Mindset

Largely credited to her professional mindset, which she calls the ‘Lucky Vicky’ mindset. This philosophy has helped her remain resilient and positive in the face of intense public scrutiny. Instead of getting affected by negative comments, she focuses on her own well-being and growth. She has stated that if a criticism isn't true, it doesn't affect her, and if it is, she works on improving herself, transforming potential negativity into motivation.

This mindset, combined with her natural talent and strong work ethic, has been key to her thriving career. Starting young, she quickly became known for her skills and visuals, leading her to secure the top spot on Produce 48. She has also maintained a disciplined routine for her physical and mental health and has even contributed to songwriting, showcasing a commitment to her craft beyond just performing. Her ability to create trends and secure major brand deals further solidifies her status as a cultural icon in the industry.

Technically this simplifies to the idea that Wonyoung sees good in things or scenario despite the challenges she faces.

'1000-year idol'

The moniker ‘1000-year idol’ is a reference to her exceptional and multifaceted success at a young age. This title highlights her ‘born-to-be-an-idol’ quality, with her career trajectory marked by significant achievements, such as finishing first in the survival show Produce 48, becoming a member of IZ*ONE, and then re-debuting with IVE. Her early and continued success, along with her ability to attract attention and garner brand deals, has led to this tag.
